God is our refuge and strength

God is our refuge and strength

By Rev. Dr. Tissa Weerasingha

Dearly Beloved Friends,
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;

“God is in the midst of her (the Church, the city of God), she shall not be moved; God shall help her, just at the break of dawn – Psalm 46 (The Bible)”

Wherever we may gather together, let us pray for our beloved Sri Lanka and for the dear suffering ones who are facing unbearable loss of their loved ones and friends at this time. The Christian community in our land is facing stress, anxiety, fear and hurt. But, blessed be Our Risen Lord, Who in the face of tribulation and hardship has given us the assurance of His presence. Sometimes, we may not FEEL His Presence, but the FACT is, He is with us, as the Lord Jesus said, to the “end of the age”.

The Tenth Commandment

  • “You shall not covet your neighbour’s house. You shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, or his man servant or maid servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbour.” (Exodus 20:17)
The Oxford Dictionary explains covetousness as “Having or showing a strong desire to possess”.  The Hebrew words used in Exodus 20:17 and Deuteronomy 5:21 both mean “to lust after” or “long for with a great desire” something that does not belong to us.

  • “Honour your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.”  ( Exodus 20:12)
  • “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” (Ephesians 6:1)
The Lord Jesus required us to obey His Word, if we love Him. His Word which tells us that we should honour and obey our parents and we must do so in obedience to God, if we are to call ourselves His children who want to walk with Him and receive His blessings, His leading and guidance.
