Nothing Too Hard
Genesis 18:4
Is anything too hard for the Lord?
My four year old has been learning and exercising the power of a persistent ‘please’. Whenever she wants something very badly, there is absolutely no limit to the number of times she can ask me for it, over and over and over again. Most times that I refuse, it is either not necessary, not suitable for her, or simply something I am unable to do. Like stop the rain so that she can play in the pool, or magically bring back a toy she accidentally left somewhere. In her childlike trust however, she does not realize that there are some things I simply cannot do, no matter how much I love her. She believes that I am all powerful!
She believes. And so she asks.
In the way she relates to me, I see so many glimpses of how God wants us to relate to Him.
Just because everything does not happen the way we want it to, does not mean that God is pleased with it, or that He cannot do anything about it. Sometimes it is simply not necessary; sometimes it is not suitable. But it is never because it is too hard for Him. Because He IS all powerful and there isn’t anything that He cannot do. He can stop the rain. He can bring back things I’ve lost. But more importantly, He can turn around hopeless situations. He can create something out of nothing. He can supply where there is lack. He can direct where there is confusion. He can touch and melt and mold hearts in a way that no one else can.
If only I’d believe. If only I’d ask.
And so let me say that this is a fitting declaration with which to begin the year. ‘Is there anything too hard for the Lord?’ All across the earth, let God’s people in one voice declare, a resounding ‘No’. 2011 is a year of unlimited possibilities. And there is nothing too hard for our God.
